Obituary By Edwin McDowell from The New York Times Archives November 13, 1986, Yuri Suhl, an author and artist, died of a cerebral hemorrhage Saturday at Martha's Vineyard Hospital. He was 78 years old and lived in Manhattan. Mr. Suhl was born in Galicia, a region of Poland that was then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and came to the United States in 1923, settling in Brooklyn. In 1932 he graduated from Jewish Workers University, a two-year night school, and took a job in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, teaching the children of Yiddish-speaking working-class immigrants. During this period, the first of Mr. Suhl's four volumes of Yiddish poems was published. He subsequently wrote a number of children's books in English, including ''Simon Boom Gives a Wedding''; ''The Man Who Made Everyone Late''; ''On the Other Side of the Gate,'' the story of a Jewish couple in Nazi-occupied Poland who are determined to have their baby despite a German order forbidding the birth of any more Jewish children, and ''Eloquent Crusader: Ernestine Rose,'' a biography of the Polish-born crusader for women's rights. The latter book, published in 1970, grew out of the author's biography for adults, ''Ernestine L. Rose and the Battle for Human Rights,'' published in 1959. He also wrote two autobiographical novels, '''One Foot in America'' and ''Cowboy on a Wooden Horse.'' One of his best-known books was ''They Fought Back: The Story of Jewish Resistance in Nazi Europe'' (1967). CONDITION: Very Good+. (Covers have light soil, bumped spine ends.
