WW2 1944 USS Callaway landing troops and supplies at Mindoro Island Tom Photo

Description: This photo is from the private collection of famed war photographer Tom Shafer from his time serving aboard the USS Callaway during World War II. The Callaway was an attack transport that was involved in many of the most notable US war operations. This original Type 1 photograph is exceptionally rare, and there is a good chance that it is one of a kind. Type & Size: A 8x10 original photograph. Condition: Good to excellent condition for the age. This photograph captures a significant moment during the landing operations at Mindoro Island, which occurred in late December 1944. It depicts a view of various military vessels lined up on the shores loaded with troops and supplies, ready for unloading. The setting highlights the maritime activity essential for wartime logistics, with the calm waters reflecting the preparations for the land operation. The Mindoro landing was a critical operation for the Allied forces in the Philippines during World War II, as it paved the way for subsequent advances towards the main island of Luzon. The successful beach assault on Mindoro took place largely without interference from Japanese ground forces, facilitating the transfer of men and material crucial for the later stages of the war in the Pacific. This operation is remembered for its strategic importance in establishing a stronghold for further military actions. LANDING AT MINDORO ISLAND
