Wood Jewel 23KIMU Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland

Description: Wood Jewel 23KIMU Scandinavian Knife Imported from Finland Wood Jewel knives are made in the far north of Finland, north of the arctic circle, in the small town of Kolari, Finland. Kauko Raatiniemi designs the knives to be beautiful as well as highly functional, using the traditional materials of curly birch wood and reindeer antler. Each knife is a work of art. The sheaths also closely follow Scandinavian tradition, with a deep-pouch design and a twisted leather thong which lets the sheath swing freely and not get in the way. The sheathes also contain a small plastic insert to prevent these very sharp blades from slicing through the sheath and into your hand..Scandinavian knife blades have what is known as a scandinavian grind, which means that the knive only has one bevel, running from roughly the center of the knife to the edge. This is the defining characteristic of scandinavian knives, as most other types of knive blades have two bevels: one that slopes more gently towards the edge, and then another bevel that slopes more sharply to form the actual edge of the blade. Scandinavian blades are very easy to sharpen, and very difficult to sharpen incorrectly. You don't need any kind of pre-formed sharpening jig or device or tool kit, just a flat stone. Lay the knife blade on top of the stone, or lay the stone on the knife, tilted to follow the angle of the bevel, and start running it back and forth until it gets sharper. The knife controls the angle for you. This also makes it much easier to sharpen a blade in the field. Scandinavian knives are also superior for wood carving, as again the single-bevel design controls the angle for you. This is a wonderfully useful combination of the puukko knife, used for smaller camp chores and carving, and the leuku, used for larger chores like butchering and chopping wood, both in the same sheath. The handles are very attractive assemblies made by pressing together many thin layers of stained wood, and then sculpting and shaping the handle so that as the different layers are exposed, they form gorgeous surface patterns. The handles have both an inset for your index finger, and hooked pommels so the knives will never slip out of your hand. The full-length tangs are evident by the brass nuts on the pommels, giving these knives added durability. The sheath contains a plastic liner to prevent the very sharp blade from slicing through, and and the belt loop is attached by a metal D-ring so that it swings freely and keeps out of the way when you're crouching or sitting. This is a really neat, compact and high-quality package!Below are the detailed measurements of this knife.
