Fr. #1802-1, with treasury signatures of Edward E. Jones as Register of the Treasury and Walter O. Woods as Treasurer of The United States. The cashier of this bank is Uylean Shimer and the President of the bank is Chester I. Monroe. This bank chartered on March 20, 1914, taking the name, “The First National Bank of Watervliet, Michigan”. This bank issued 14,217 small size Nationals, from 1929 thru July of 1935 when the note issuing period ended. The note has four full even margins. This note is very dirty and toned from years of being carried around in a wallet. The back of the note is much worse then the front, and also seems to be oxidized. I would say that the back of the note is walletized from being folded and carried around in a wallet for many years, most likely a signor of the note or their family. I do not see any rips or tears, but there is a tiny split in the top margin at the vertical centerfold. The split is 1/8” long, and just barely touches the top of the holding line in the design. I grade this note as a Good / Very Good, but you look at the scans and judge for yourself. The Kelly Census shows 30 small size notes reported on the bank, 5 of these notes are $5.00 Type 1’s, 12 are $10.00 Type 1’s, 2 are $10.00 Type -2’s, and 11 are $20.00 Type-1’s. This note would make a fine addition to any Michigan State banknote collection. The bank was located in Berrien County. This note should appeal to those collecting that County and its surrounding areas. Watervliet is a one bank town located in the South Western corner of Michigan. Don’t let this note get away!
