Hasse Wojtyla. Born in Illinois, Wojtyla received a B.F.A. in painting from the University of Illinois in 1956. Initially influenced by abstract expressionism, Wojtyla worked in New York in the late 1950s and 1960s before moving to San Diego. Wojtyla became a widely known painter in San Diego, exhibiting regularly from the 1970s until his death in 2014. Wojtyla's style evolved from abstract expressionism to a figurative abstractionism that explored themes of crime and brutality in a style reminiscent of Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon. Wojtyla exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, the San Diego Museum of Art, Meyer Fine Art in San Diego, the San Diego Artists Guild, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and a 2006 retrospective at the Oceanside Museum of Art.
