The Jones Manufacturing Company had been producing a stapling machine since 1895 known as the Star Paper Fastener. The Star Paper Fastener is the direct antecedent of the Hotchkiss No. 1. In 1901, after some design changes, the Star Paper Fastener was released as the Hotchkiss No. 1.
