"Bono" Hewson (vocalist), "The Edge" Evans (guitarist), Adam Clayton (bassist) and Larry Mullen (drummer) met in school in Dublin. The band debuted on record with a couple of singles which immediately did well in Ireland. By the time they released their first LP, Boy, U2 had established a reputation for the soaring approach typified by their international hit "I Will Follow." Boy found its way into the upper reaches of the American album charts in 1981 and paved the way for October, a complex and sophisticated second album. War, the third U2 album, has subsequently proven to be an important breakthrough for the young band. On the wings of the fastpaced "New Year's Day" and "Two Hearts Beat As One," the LP moved into the Top 10. War was recorded in analog by British producer Steve Lillywhite (who's handled all of U2's Island output).
