Descriptive text from separate pages at the back which cannot be supplied (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used)A SOUTH INDIAN VILLAGE. We have here a view of the village of Teruparankundram, which lies near Madura, in the Madras Presidency. The view is a characteristic one, with the village sheltered under the steep hillside, the flat-roofed houses, the great temple standing in the midst, and the elaborate tower, or Gopura, rising high above the rest. The southern extremity of the Indian peninsula, in which Madura is situated, has long been a peaceful, undisturbed district in comparison with the Punjaub, or even with the central provinces. It has long been free from the scourge of war, and its population, never among the most warlike of the Indian races, now lead a tranquil life without martial ambition, and with such contentment as is possible in the presence of extreme poverty, protected by the just rule of the British Government.
