This is the great metallurgical capital of South Wales, occupying the centre of Swansea Bay, on both banks of the mouth of the river Tawe. The docks contain a very extensive area of water, and the trade of the port is very great, chiefly connected with the metal industries. A great part of the copper ore of the world comes to Swansea to be smelted and worked; and the exports comprise an enormous tonnage of coal and various manufactured metals; especially copper, steel, zinc, and tin plates. The various works extend for miles up the banks of the Tawe, and produce a dense cloud of smoke which nearly always hangs over the valley. The same is in great measure true of Neath, hard by in the same bay; but within a few miles of both may be found clear air and most beautiful scenery.
