Description: This is a vintage antique sample of barbed wire fencing. This sample features a Spencer St. John patent, dated January 15, 1878. This wire is called "St. John's Ess and Staple Four Point" by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 606-B). This wire features two round line wires twisted together. Barbs are four pointed made from two barbing wires. One barbing line is bent into a "U" and placed straddling one line wire, second barbing wire is bent into an "ESS" configuration around the two legs of the first barbing wire, and legs of first barbing wire bent outwards, and second line wire wrapped to lay over the "Ess". Wire sample shows moderate to heavy pitting. Sample is 18" in length. There are two barbs. Barbs are well spaced, and cut is fairly well centered. There are no broken or missing barbing points.
