Description: This is probably the best piece of silver we have ever offered. It is a 2500 (approx) gram silver tray by Faberge workmaster Stephen Wakeva (1833-1910). The tray bears both Wakeva's halmark and assay mark for 84 zolotnik (.875 purity)of Alexander Timofeyevich Shevyakov St Petersburg 1896. Stephan Wakeva was born in Sakkijarvi in Viipuri Duchy of Finland in 1833. He apprenticed in St. Petersburg in the workshop of silversmith Olof Frederick Wennerstrom in 1943. He was a journeyman at the age of 14 in 1847 and master in 1856. Wakeva's workshop at 41 of the fifth of Rozdestvenskaya (Sovetskaya) St, Petersburg supplied Faberge with silverware, mostly tea services, tankards and punchbowls. Waveva's two sons Alexander and Konstantin also worked for Faberge after taking over their father's workshop after his death in 1910. This tray was bought by my consignor's Great Grandfather in Konigsberg probably in 1896 and bears the initials of his and his wife's families. It was brought out of Germany when the family emigrated to the US in the 30's and has been with the family ever since. It has fairly moderate scratching from an overzealous polisher in the past but I think it could be fairly easily buffed to perfection. The tray is 22.75" long (end of handle to end of handle) and is 15.25" wide. There is one tiny dimple in the corner of the tray otherwise it is in very good condition.
