The automatic module is not included with the watch, and the price reflects this adjustment.*** The current manual movement is in excellent running order keeping accurate time and has recently benefited from a full inspection by a Rolex specialist master horologist with no issues to report. In 1953, the not-yet-Sir Edmund Hillary and his expedition partner, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to ever successfully reach the summit of Everest. They did so with a Rolex on their wrists, an Oyster Perpetual that would prove to be the ancestor of the Explorer. This particular watch is the same reference (6098) as the Everest watch worn by Tenzing and Hillary, an iconic piece representing the very DNA of the horology titans. The 6098 has a classic Oyster case, measuring 36mm in diameter, larger than most watches of its era, making it both visually striking and more practical for explorers. The matt black dial known for its simplicity and clarity, features lume filled arrow markers similar to what would later become iconic on the Explorer variants. A cracking example of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual reference 6098 with a substantial 36mm case size boasting a much sought after handsome dial which has developed patina and presents as a Matt black variant with creamy aged patina to the lume. The rare and much sought after dial variant featuring raised gold gilt arrow markers, outer chapter ring featuring minute indices sets the tone of the dial. Elegant and complete lume filled gold gilt ‘Dauphine’ handset, which contrasts well with the rest of the dial. Gold gilt tapered steel centre seconds sweep hand. Sharp lugs in great condition. Case is 36mm without the crown, 38mm with the crown, and 20mm between the lugs. Serial numbered 726*** between lugs at ‘6’ dating watch to 1951 on the Rolex date registry. Bearing reference number 6098 between lugs at ‘12’. Chamfered smooth polished bezel. Case has surface hairline scratches and some pitting associated with base metals commensurate with everyday wear and age. Overall solid condition given the age. The Original Case Back Cover Inner: Featuring period Rolex ornate design logo - Signed Geneva Swiss Rolex Patented 6098. Has scratches, pitting and small dents - period service markers present. The Original Case Back Cover Outer: Bubbleback milled edge cover has surface scratches with dents and signs of pitting associated with base metals commensurate with age and wear. The Rolex Crown/Winder: Rolex push and pull crown signed with Rolex coronet and cross in relief. A later replacement crown - In good working order. The Original Crystal: Domed Plexiglass is in good condition for age.
