Description: This painting of the Kokopelmana kachina was done by Hopi artist Rod Phillips (1948-2005). Kokopelmana is the female companion of the well known Kokopelli kachina. The painting looks to be on paper. It has been nicely matted, covered with glass and framed with a wooden frame. The painting measures 18" x 12" inside the mat. With the frame it measures 25 1/2" x 19". It is signed by Rod Phillips in the lower left and identified as the Kokopelmana underneath the the figure at the bottom. This painting is in great vintage condition. Hopi artist Rod Phillips was known for Katsina Doll carvings as well as for paintings. He was the son of Loren Phillips, a well known silversmith. He attended the Hopi Day School, Phoenix Day School, and Haskell Indian School in Kansas. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 57 years. The Kokopelli Mana is a rarely carved Hopi kachina doll that is the female companion of Kokopelli, the humpbacked flute player. The Hopi consider the Kokopelli Mana to be a seductress who runs in ceremonial races and entices boys to race. When depicted as a kachina, she is carved barefoot and in action, hiking up her dress after being tackled. Her mask is traditionally painted in black and white.
