Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION REVOLUTIONARY WAR Congressional COMITIA AMERICANA Battle of Cowpens >AWARD MEDAL Description This is a beautiful, high relief, “Comitia Americana” or American Congress Medal that was awarded by the “Continental Congress” on March 9, 1781 to Lieutenant Colonel “John Eager Howard” for his actions at the “Battle of Cowpens” on January 17, 1781. Howard commanded the light infantry at Cowpens and by his gallant bayonet charge at just the right moment, turned the enemy and made them flee. He then led the pursuit that gave them no time to rally. His medal was delayed in production and the one he got was finished in 1789. It now resides in the Smithsonian. The mint in Philadelphia reproduced new dies in 1881. During the Bicentennial celebrations the United States Mint restruck these medals in Pewter using the original dies. The original was voted by the Continental Congress and was produced and struck in France. It was designed and signed by Pierre Simon Benjamin Duvivier (1728-1819). Weight: 21.19 Grams, 38 Millimeters, Pewter. "A Guide Book to United States Medals and Tokens" by Katherine Jaeger. (General Reference). The “Battle of Cowpens” was fought during the revolution on January 17, 1781 near the town of Cowpens, South Carolina. It was between forces under U.S. General Daniel Morgan and British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, as part of the campaign in the Carolinas. The battle was a turning point in the American reconquest of South Carolina from the British.
