The removable door has 2 finger holes to aid in removal. The top also has another storage component that is latched by a leather strap that has worn apart. Once undone, the wooden storage box comes done and opens by metal hinges to multiple storage compartments that would have store flatware and such. This is a rare and authentic WW2 Era Military Collectible Enameled Dishes Officer's Mess Kit from 1942. All contents are in good condition with slight staining on outside here and there expected for age. Please let me know if you have any questions. since i am limited on only 24 pictures I tried to include all with detail. The chest itself must have been stored in barn as you can see photos. leather handles mostly gone and metal has rust but box itself is still sturdy made with wood but the substance that covered wood it mostly worn away. but it still holds all contents with no danger of being damaged.I absolutely love the fact that has original paper list of contents worn apart from age. I don't have picture but i also found a piece of candy wrapper for Curtis Assorted fruit drops 1940s which must have been popular candy of the day which reminds me of life savers. Just something a little extra.
