Description: Original hand colored highly detailed 1865 map of Texas. The map was published by Johnson & Ward, New York and is titled: "Johnson's New Map of the State of Texas." The map has a decorative fretwork border, and the image area measures a generous 43 x 62 cm [17" x 24½"]. Details include numerous wagon roads, the Laredo Road, the Lower or Old Presidio del Rio Grande Road, the Wells Road, the Rio San Pedro or Devil's Road, the Upper Road to El Paso, and many others, unnamed. Among the other named places and features are Camp Hudson, Fort Clark, Austin City, Dallas, McDonald's District Number 11, Houston, Marshall, Barnard's Old Trading House, Belknap Indian Reserve, Shelbyville, Brazos River, Fort Phanom Hill, Paris, Tarkington's Prairie, German Settlements, Corpus Christi, Fort Ewell Rifles Military Station, San Antonio, Hays District Number 6, Camp Lancaster, Fort Davis, Cora, and the Canadian River, which is also labeled "Goo-al-pah," from the Comanche and Kiowa name for the river. There are only three named counties in the vast table lands in the western part of the state: Presidio, El Paso, and Bexar, which extends north to what would become the Oklahoma Panhandle. There are three inset plans in the lower left quadrant: Sabine Lake, Galveston Bay, and the northern part of Texas. The map also labels the proposed route of the Houston & Guaymas Railroad, stretching west through Columbus and San Antonio to Fort Leaton, on the border with Mexico. It does not appear that this railway was ever built. Condition: This map is in very good condition, sound and clean, with an overall antique patina and attractive appearance. There are a couple of minor closed edge tears, the center fold has been reinforced on the reverse side with archival tape, and the upper left corner has been remargined. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It is an excellent example of the cartographic artistry of the Johnson & Ward firm, one of the nation's most esteemed early mapmakers. Johnson maps are proudly showcased in museums, libraries, and private collections around the world. This map would make an impressive display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips with your purchase, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published.
