Description: Antique lithographed map compiled by Gaspard-Joseph Chaussegros de Lery showing French land grants along both shores of Lake Champlain, as recorded by the King's surveyor Sr. Anger in 1732. North is drawn to the left, and the coverage area extends from Fort Chambly to the southern end of the lake, where a "Great Carrying Place" was four leagues from the Hudson River. Text is in French (above) and English (below) and includes the names of seigniories and landowners, as well as islands, rivers, forts, and settlements. The map is titled "Carte du Lac Champlain Depuis le fort Chambly jusquáu fort St. Frederick Levée par le Sr Anger arpenteur du Roy en 1732 fait à Quebec le 10 Octobere 1748 Signé de Lery." ("Map of Lake Champlain from the Fort Chambly to Fort St. Frederick or Crown Point, surveyed by Mr. Anger, King's surveyor, in 1732. Made at Quebec the 10th October 1748 and signed de Lery.") Specific named places and features include Lake George, Chazy River, Isle La Motte, Fort St. Jean, Grand Isle, the Missisquoi River, and Fort la Reine, now Ticonderoga, and the "Orange or Hudsons River, by which one may go in five hours to Albany, being not further than fifteen leagues. Albany lies on the Banks of the River and has a swift stream and is very pretty." This authentic mid-19th century map was lithographed by Richard H. Pease after de Lery's original and published in Volume Two of The Documentary History of the State of New York, Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, Albany, New York, 1849. Condition: It is in very good condition, bright and clean, with folds, as issued, a small closed tear at the left edge, and no marks or writing. It is printed on a lightweight paper and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. It folds to 7½" x 5½". Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. In addition to a wide variety of official maps and documents, Pease also printed general interest books and children's books. He is acknowledged as the first to have used the image of Santa Claus in an advertisement and the person who printed the first Christmas card in the United States. This map would make a very handsome display, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published more than 170 years ago.
