Nikolai Myaskovsky Selected Symphonies 3CDs Sealed USSR State Symphony Orchestra

Description: Nikolai Myaskovsky Selected Symphonies 3 CDs Sealed. Product Description Melodiya presents a set of selected symphonies by Nikolai Myaskovsky. This composer's music is not widely popular today. Meanwhile, he belongs to the number of Russia's brightest music talents of the first half of the 20th century. His music organically combines old and new, traditions of classical music culture and keenness of expressionism, high tragicalness of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky and boldness of music avant-garde. Dmitri Shostakovich considered Mayskovsky 'the major symphonist after Mahler', and Sergei Prokofiev wrote that Myaskovsky 'was somewhat more a philosopher - his music is wise, passionate, gloomy and self-absorbed'. Symphony was the most important genre to the composer. His twenty-seven symphonies composed during 40 years are a sort of a personal diary reflecting a complicated and winding path of his artistic evolution. At the same time, they are a music chronicle of the age, a response of the big artist to the most significant historic and cultural events of the time. The set includes six symphonies from Myaskovsky's latter period (1935 to 1950) - Nos 16, 17, 21, 22, 25 and 27 - performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by the outstanding Evgeny Svetlanov (the only conductor in the world to record all Myaskovsky's symphonies) and his predecessor in the State Orchestra Konstantin Ivanov, one of the major representatives of the Soviet conducting school. Six of the best Miaskovsky symphonies in great performances. Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 November 2014 Nice to see a new Miaskovsky (I prefer that spelling) release on Melodiya. This three CD set contains six of Miaskovsky's finest symphonies (16,17,21,22,25,27) from the later part of his career. The importance for me of this set is that it includes two performances that, to my knowledge, have never been released on CD before, namely the Symphony 16 and Symphony 21 (possibly Miaskovsky's greatest) conducted by Konstantin Ivanov. They were both recorded in 1950 so are truly historic recordings and allowances need to be made for the rather constricted sound, compared to later recordings. Having said that I loved both performances. The wonderful funeral March at the heart of Symphony 16 (a tribute to those killed in the 'Maxim Gorky' air disaster) is taken faster than on the alternative Svetlanov recording (Alto/Warner) but I found it just as effective and moving - one of the composer's finest inspirations. Much the same goes for the concise, eloquent and poetic Symphony 21; a marvellous score. I think that the other symphonies are the same as have previously appeared on the Olympia/Alto and Warner box sets. The Warner set came with inadequate notes (largely non-existent) and this nicely packaged Melodiya set contains a concise but meaningful booklet note (in Russian, English and French). The cover art is quite extraordinary; 'Oak Tree Splintered by Lightning. Allegory on the Artist's Wife's Death, 1842' by M. Vorobiev. My only regret is that Melodiya did not include Alexander Gauk's premiere recording of Miaskovsky's valedictory and deeply moving 27th Symphony, which lead to the posthumously awarded Stalin Prize and rehabilitation of the composer after the digraceful denunciation of his music in the Zhdanov purge of 1948 (along with Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Khachaturian and Popov). It is even more moving than Svetlanov's fine account. Svetlanov's account of Symphony No.25 in this set is deeply moving and it contains one of the composers most heartfelt moments, about five minutes into the first movement. This release should give much pleasure to admirers of the introverted composer, described as 'small, shy, bearded and never to be seen without his briefcase'. Review Fascinating compilation of later symphonies by a hugely significant Soviet composer.
