Nile, a death metal band from South Carolina, was formed in 1993 by the only remaining original member, Karl Sanders (guitar/vocals/keyboards). After releasing two demos and an EP, they signed with Relapse Records. In 1998, they released their debut album, "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka." Their highly technical songs and, as the band name "Nile" suggests, their unique style of music, with a strong inclination towards Middle Eastern culture, especially Egypt, have created a big sensation in the extreme metal world. Incorporating Middle Eastern instruments and melodies is a common phrase in the rock world, but Nile is in a class of its own. Not only does Karl play traditional instruments such as the bouzouki, but he also has a deep knowledge of ancient Egyptology that is beyond the pale.
