About the Mormon Battalion:The formation of the Mormon Battalion in the mid-19th century stands as a unique and remarkable chapter in American history. In 1846, as the United States was embroiled in the Mexican-American War, a call was extended by the U.S. government to enlist members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly known as Mormons, to form a military unit, the Mormon Battalion. The call was met with an overwhelming response from the Latter-day Saint community. Comprising over 500 men, women, and children, the Mormon Battalion commenced its arduous march from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego, California, covering a distance of roughly 2,000 miles. Led by appointed officers and under the leadership of Colonel Philip St. George Cooke, the battalion's journey was marked by extreme weather conditions, challenging terrains, and scarcity of resources. Remarkably, the Mormon Battalion did not engage in major military conflicts during its service, yet its contribution was significant. The battalion played a crucial role in the exploration and development of the American West, forging a trail that would later be utilized by pioneers heading to the Salt Lake Valley. The sacrifice and resilience of the Mormon Battalion left an indelible mark on the history of westward expansion and remain a testament to the enduring spirit of the Mormon pioneers in the face of adversity. This book seeks to put names to those who served - many of which have been anonymous with their great sacrifices. Copyright © 2018-2023 TDM Inc. The photos and text in this listing are copyrighted.
