Leather Bound Dowry Hope Chest w Butterfly Decoration Antique Storage Box India

Description: This chest looks to have been made in India, but it is not marked that I've been able to find. The exterior is completely bound in leather, including the legs, except for the very bottom. I do not know what kind of leather it is, but it's a very dark brown at this point. The box is decorated with very thin metal, probably stamped tin, which is silver in places and has more of a darker, brass look in others. The tin is very thin and is bent over in places. The front, sides and top have prominent medallions with a butterfly decoration. The hasp is a little thicker but also nicely decorated. All the decoration is fastened with rivets and the legs are put together in a style, that is not quite dove tailing, but was not done with hardware either. They may give a hint to the age and area in which it was made. The inside has a black cloth lining which is pulled down on the back side exposing the hinge for the lid. It is fastened in with flat head screws and is one long hinge across almost the entire side for strength. The wood that is exposed is very, very dark. I believe that this one was probably made in the early 20th century. The flat head screws indicate that it was probably made before World War II, but that it is not ancient. The hinge and screws for it are the only thing that don't look to be hand done on this one. I believe, base on the size and decoration, that it was originally a dowry chest, it's to small for a blanket chest, but it really looks like it would be great for holding treasure! It measures 50 cm or about 19-5/8" x 12-1/4" x 14-3/4" tall. Thank you for taking a look! Hopefully you'll check out my other items.
