Description: JOHN HIGAR VTG SIGNED ORIG OIL PAINTING BROWN COUNTY INDIANA AUTUMN LANDSCAPE John Higar, later known as Billyjohn Rainbow, was an artist during the 1970's in Indianapolis. Higar studied art at Indiana University and at the Modern Art Center in Brown County, Indiana. He often painted as the pre-show entertainment at the Black Curtain Dinner Theater. At intermission of the play, his paintings would be auctioned to the audience. His painting style was unique—often using his hands or some strange tool and painting with the canvas upside down. As he painted, it would be almost impossible to tell what he was painting until he finished. The original oil on canvas painting offered here is lovely autumn landscape featuring a red clapboard covered bridge. Titled “The Old Timer,” the painting depicts the Bean Blossom Covered Bridge just outside Nashville, Indiana. The painting is signed and dated (’61) on the front in the lower right and twice again on the reverse beneath the title and location. The painting is unframed and measures 22” x 30” and is in very good original condition, although there is a small, barely noticeable 3/4" tear above and to the left of the signature (see photos). This is a beautiful painting by a listed Brown County artist that would make a terrific addition to any collection.
