Description: Little SaluteDrypoint by James McNeill Whistler1880 One of Whistler's Venice prints, but not included in the Venice Sets. The Glasgow catalogue raisonne only lists 10 impressions of this print across three state. A fine printing of the final state with the butterfly signature in the plate. Inky edges and delicate surface tone. Framed in gilded wood with some small scratches behind glass. Not examined out of frame. I quote from Glasgow: "A panorama of Venice, seen across the water, where, at the right, are two gondolas and a boat under sail. To left of center rise the domes of Santa Maria della Salute, with buildings at the right and with shipping in front. Across the Grand canal at the left are buildings slightly indicated, and at far right is a church with a dome." State III:"Signed with a butterfly at lower right. New details are added to the buildings and boats along the horizon, most notably to the sailing ships to left and right and in front of Santa Maria della Salute, and to the Salute's right dome; reflections of the Salute are fully developed, consisting of short broken lines; small patches of reflection are added to left and right of the Salute and below the large gondola at right; there are faint new lines on the sky above the horizon at right. The scraping marks at left, right and bottom of the image remain visible on most impressions and vary according to inking, wiping and wear on the plate." Plate: 3 1/4 inches x 8 1/4 inches
