Photographers: Alan Nahigian; Chuck Stewart. This selection of eleven tracks is culled from three different albums. The first four cuts, from DUKE ELLINGTON MEETS COLEMAN HAWKINS, include the spectacularly catchy "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," among others, and feature the thick, gorgeous stylings of Hawkins, whose solo on "Mood Indigo" can raise goose bumps. The next few, from an album Duke did with John Coltrane, include "In A Sentimental Mood," and "C Jam Blues." Coltrane plays with reverence and great sensitivity on the ballads here, but still remains true to his personal aesthetic with his stratospheric shower of sound on "Stevie." A medley of hits, including "Black and Tan Fantasy," "Prelude To A Kiss" and "Caravan," and a fully-fleshed rendering of "Satin Doll," are taken from LIVE AT THE WHITNEY. An unusual set insofar as Duke plays with only a quartet here, these are impassioned, newly shaped versions of some of Ellington's favorites. A fine sampler of wonderful songs, notable collaborations and remarkable playing, this compilation deserves attention. About Movie Mars All items are Brand New.
