It is paired with one of the lightest and strongest road bike aluminum wheels available today, the Campagnolo Shamal. This front wheel is finished in black and has bladed spokes. It has extremely low miles and is pefectly true. Very minimal wear on the brake tracks. What it Is: This is a ground up custom road bike wheel featuring the famed Onyx Vesper Hub (Road Bike Version) built with a DT Swiss 460 Wheel with 32 Sapim Spokes. You can use Shimano 10 and 11 speed HG Hyperglide speed cassettes on this hub. Why This Wheel Was Built I wanted a wheel that was faster than any available off-the shelf high end road bike wheel. I had ridden Road Bike Wheels with the DT Swiss, White Industries,Chris King, ZIPP NSWs and a plethora of other high end road bike wheels with high end hubs. Constant obsessive research on the internet consistently pointed me to the Onyx Vesper, once i jumped into the rabbit hole of finding the fastest road bike hubs available to average road bike riders. My goal was pure and ridiculously simple. i wanted to ride the fastest spinning road bike wheels available but not break the bank and keeping the budget reasonable and under $1,000.00. Why Was The Onyx Vesper Hub Chosen Over The Rest? The Onyx Vesper, in its current second generation/iteration is a uniquely designed hub that incorporates the design of a tried and proven Sprag Clutch which is employed in vehicles and in aviation. The most prominent application of the Sprag clutch is in helicopters where maximal rotational speed of the primary rotor is required when the engine fails and obtaining a soft landing is crucial to avoid a hard helicopter landing. The Sprag clutch allows the helicopter rotor to spin with minimal friction thereby allowing maximum velocity of the helicoptor rotor when it spins without the motor being engaged. The minimization of friction also applies when designing and building mountain and road bike hubs. The Onyx Vesper hubs are eerily noiseless as this is a characteristic of the friction-less spinning of the hub internals. They were able to design the hub in this manner to allow the bike wheel to spin with much less friction than other hubs on the market while still maintaining strength, durability and reliability in being able to handle the torque of a demanding mountain bike ride or a road bike sprint. The group ride averages about 25-30 miles of varied road topography with lots of rolling hills with moderate ascents thrown in to mix it up and to keep everyone honest. In addition, all sprag elements maintain gentle contact with the driver and hub body, gliding with minimal friction until torque is applied. Their unusual shape allows freewheeling in only one direction. When a rider pedals to induce torque, the sprags rock slightly to wedge between the hub and driver, giving Onyx hubs infinite points of engagement, always ready to go when you are. Since there are no teeth or spring-engaged pawls like those found in conventional ratchet mechanisms, Onyx hubs are almost noiseless during freewheeling. Modular Freehub Unit (MFU) – The MFU design is standard on the Onyx Vesper hub line and Classic hub series. Rather than sharing the drive and axle loads in our freehub system, the drive and axle loads work independently. Two oversized bearings in the hub shell support the driver, which also actuates the sprag clutch engagement system. The freehub body interfaces with the driver but spins on a separate set of bearings. This design generates longer bearing life in the freehub and stiffens the rear axle assembly. Hyperglide Alloy Freehub – Onyx Hyperglide alloy freehub bodies are not like the rest. They feature steel inserts to combat gouging while saving weight over a steel freehub. The freehub itself is machined from 7075 aluminum alloy and utilizes steel pins to reinforce seven of the splines. This patented design enables cassette alignment using the two key slots and replaceable wear faces on the remaining slots. When worn out, the steel pins are replaceable by hand or with a set of pliers. Ceramic Hybrid Bearings are standard on Onyx BMX Race hubs and Classic Hubs. Specially formulated for Onyx Racing Products bicycle hubs, these bearings feature ceramic (Si3N4) ball bearings and a hardened chrome steel race.
