Count the Cats in Zanzibar Sailing Memoir

Description: This is a rare and unique book - part travel essay, part memoir, part sailing log and seamanship - that details the authors travels around the world on a small sailboat. Published in 1975 by Tidewater Publishers of Cambridge, Maryland, it is a record of an extraordinary life cruising the oceans. 113 pages including numerous photographs. From the back cover: "Born in the small town of Sarasota, Florida in 1924, Jim Crawford had cruised aboard various small vessels from Maine to Havana by the time he was fourteen years of age. His principal occupations were washing dishes, spilling brass polish, and reading. His favorite companions were professional sailors who sometimes infuriated him with their attention to detail. One, a Cayman Islander, used to retie every bowline the author made with that special tug that "sets" the knot. He will be forever grateful to them. After graduation in 1942 from Woodberry Forest School and failing and N.R.O.T.C. physical at Harvard, Crawford enlisted in the Navy. Before sea duty in a destroyer he taught navigation at N.A.S. Jacksonville. From 1946-1958, he was part-owner and President of the Snead Island Boat Works. He learned a lot from the old hands there and ocean raced obsessively. Jim Crawford is a veteran of nine St. Petersburg to Havana Races, many Nassau Races, two Transatlantics, two Bermuda Races, a Transpacific, and two Fastnets. So far he has made forty trips on the Intracoastal Waterway from the Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. From 1958-1960, he sailed the gaff-headed schooner Dirigo II around the world by way of Good Hope. Since 1964 thre have been seven Atlantic crossings in his cutter, Agantyr. In 1974, the Cruising Club of American honored Mr. Crawford "for extraordinary accomplishments in worldwide cruising".
