Call it single phase, two-phase, or split phase: 120/240V or 125/250V: these NEMA L14-20P locking plugs are used for 20 Amp applications on generators throughout North America up to about 5,000 watts. Higher-wattage generators may also have one or more of these, though they may also have L14-30 outlets and others. These are also common in pro audio and computer rack applications: anywhere a straight-blade plug jerked or drifting out of its socket can be a show-stopper. Study the face of your outlet carefully, and compare it to the diagrams I have supplied. The L14-30R looks similar at first glance, is not compatible, and sorry: I don't have any. White-filled is socket view: black-filled is plug view. Naturally they are mirror images. 3 poles plus ground/4 wire provides both hots, a neutral, and safety ground. These can be used to serve sub-panels or breakout boxes providing a 240V circuit and/or two 120V circuits, used with L14-20 extension cords, and direct-connect equipment. Brass and thermoplastic construction, these are TOUGH. I went at one of these with a 3 lb sledge hammer against a concrete surface and could not crack them: neither could I deform them beyond the point where they couldn't be reformed and made serviceable. Even the clear plastic conductor separator disks, which often crack if you look at them funny, could not be cracked. Accepts .250-.775 12/4 or 10/4 SO cable. Bolted yoke design praised for versatility, semi-positive lock, and strain-relief in the face of heavy cable assemblies. Cooper is now making some if not all of these in other countries. These are made in the USA. Make of that what you may.
