Systematic studies on the rates of chemical conversions were started with the fundamental works of N. A. Menshutkin in the late seventies of the last century. In the eighties, Van't Hoff and Arrhenius formulated the fundamental laws governing simple chemical reactions, and gave theoretical explanations of these laws, starting from the molecular- kinetic theory. The concepts were further developed in the thirties of our century by H. Eyring and M. Polanyi. These authors used the ideas of quantum mechanics and statistical physics, and derived the theory of absolute reaction rates, which made it possible to calculate the rates of simple (elementary) reactions from the properties of the reacting particles. At the same time, at the beginning of the twentieth century papers appeared on the kinetics of complex reactions. We shall mention the studies of A. N. Bakh and N. A. Shilov on oxidation reactions. These were among the first in this field. The papers of M. Bodenstein were most important for the development of general methods for studying complex reactions. The stationary concentration method proposed by this author forms the basis of the mathematical analysis of a large number of classes of complex chemical reactions, including unbranched chain reactions. The general theory of chain reactions formulated in the thirties of this century is the outstanding achievement of this theory. In this era C. N. Hinshel wood studied the mechanism of complex chemical processes, especially of chain reactions. In nature and in industrial practice a very large number of very variegated chemical processes take place, from the simplest reactions of substances under laboratory conditions to the most complex processes occurring in the living organism. But at present we know only a relatively small number of participants in elementary reactions. They are molecules, free radicals and atoms, and ions and complexes of various chemical structure and composition. The properties of these particles determine in principle the characteristics of the mechanism, and the patterns along which chemical reactions develop. This in itself makes it possible to create a general theory of chemical kinetics, which includes the very different organic, inorganic, and biochemical processes. _gsrx_vers_625 (GS 6.9.7 (625))
