Description: Vintage Charles Garrett Donovan Watercolor Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this unframed, vintage watercolor painting on paper by Charles Garrett Donovan. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This colorful painting depicts Newport Harbor, including the famed restaurant riverboat, the Reuben E. Lee. In the foreground, there is a rocky shore and a tree; beyond the harbor is a skyline cityscape. This painting measures approximately 14 inches by 20 inches. This would be a great addition to a collection of California art. Identification This painting is by Charles Garrett Donovan (1920-2001), a well-known, listed California artist. Per askART, Donovan was born in Santa Monica, California and he grew up in Forth Worth, Texas. He was interested in art as a youth, and he studied art with Blanch McVeigh while he was a high school student. Donovan attended the Curtis-Wright Technical Institute in California, where he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering. He worked for Douglas Aircraft and General Dynamics for decades. During the period from 1944 to 1946, he continued his artistic endeavors while he was a U.S. Marine. In 1981, Donovan retired from engineering and began to devote his time to his fine art career. Donovan studied at the Fort Worth Art Center under James Steagall. He also studied with artists Robert E. Wood, Ed Whitney, Arthur Beaumont, and Dong Kingman. Donovan taught at Texas Christian University and University of California, Los Angeles. He was a member of the Texas Watercolor Society and the Southwest Watercolor Society (where he served as President). He served as the President of the San Diego Watercolor Society in 1986. Active in his community, Donovan was also a member of the San Diego Artist's Guild and San Diego Art Institute. He was a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society. Donovan was an award-winning artist, receiving prize recognition at the annual American Watercolor Society shows in 1991, 1992, and 1994, and at the National Watercolor Society annual shows in 1989 and 1993. He also was an Arts for The Parks Finalist during 1991 and 1992. Donovan was an award winner with the San Diego Watercolor Society, Southwestern Watercolor Society, and Western Watercolor Federation. The painting is numbered, titled, and dated verso, "1469 "CHARLIE BROWN'S STERN" 2-'96 (PAINT-OUT)." The boat depicted in the painting was located in Newport Harbor, California. This landmark watercraft was the site of the Reuben E. Lee restaurant; later it was Charlie Brown's Steakhouse and then the Riverboat Restaurant. Eventually, it was renamed the Pride of Newport. The vessel was dismantled in 2007. Condition This unframed painting looks very good overall. There are no rips or creases to the paper. At the lower right, there are two tiny holes where there may have originally been a staple (there is no paint under the area where the staple would have been); this is visible in Photo 1. There are some small areas of spots which may or may not be watercolor paint. There are a couple of faint areas which may be minor marks/smudges. There are minor color differences where the previous framing covered the edges. The back side is as shown. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1. Payments Taxes may be applicable.
