Description: Shipping c.1908 Portfolio/Works of Art From The Egyptian Museum Cairo/50 Collotype Plates Works of Art from the Egyptian Museum at Cairo With explanations by Ludwig Borchardt. (Translated by George A. Reisner.) Cairo: F. Diemer Succ., and Dresden: Kunstanstalt Stengel & Co., nd. (c. 1908) text and plates loose as issued in portfolio, folio (12.5 x 16.5 in.). ii,19pp. 50 collotype plates mounted on dark brown card mounts. Portfolio worn around the edges. The fine mounted plates are loose as issued in the brown cloth printed portfolio. From the library of Harold Hayden NELSON (1878-1954) famed American Egyptologist and director Oriental Institute University of Chicago with his name in pen on half title page. SCARCE this condition The Getty Museum Library has indicated a c.1908 for this same work in their collection as no date is given. There is also a small inked dedication in the extreme lower right corner of the title page reading "To Marty from Ed. Birthday, 1946". Beyond that the work is in near fine condition with two small areas of old cloth tape to corners of one portfolio flap. The Collotype plates are magnificent - and show considerable detail. This fine work is generally conceded to be one of the first major publications geared to the general educated public to appear - and it remains a most handsome publication in near fine condition today. The editor of this work, Ludwig Borchardt (1863 - 1938) was a German Egyptologist. He is best known for finding a famous bust of Nefertiti at Amarna, which is not included in the present work as it was sent to the Neues Museum in Berlin - where it resides today. Even more interesting is the recent controversy asserting that Borchardt smuggled the bust of Nefertiti out of Egypt by reporting it as an artifact made of gypsum. However, the Swiss art historian Henri Stierlin has claimed that the bust is a copy dating from 1912! Egypt has called for the return of the bust, citing provisions that prohibited any items of great archaeological value from leaving Egypt. Egypt accuses Borchardt of "wrapping the bust to conceal its value and smuggling it out of the country". The Nefertiti bust has become not only a defining emblem of ancient Egypt, but also a symbol of the impact that European colonialism has had on Egypt's history and culture. It has been the subject of an argument between Egypt and Germany over Egyptian demands for its repatriation, which began in 1924, once the bust was first displayed to the public, and more generally it fueled discussions over the role museums play in undoing colonialism.Today, Egypt continues to demand the repatriation of the bust, whereas German officials and the Berlin Museum assert their ownership by citing an official protocol, signed by the German excavators and the French-led Egyptian Antiquities Service of the time. And so the battle continues for one of the most famous artifacts from Ancient Egypt. Successful bidders please note: INSURANCE on all items over $100 strongly recommended.
