Description: This is such an unusual book! It is written by Arkady Averchenko (1881 - 1925), a Russian writer and satirist. His work at satirical magazine Satyricon was denounced after the October Revolution and he emigrated, eventually living in Prague where he died. This is his story Kola Na Vode, which Google translates as Wheels on Water. The subtitle needs no translation: humoresque, a satire. It was translated by Vinc. Cervinka, and at the bottom of the title page says 'published at my own expense, Prague.' On the verso of the title page it says 'all rights reserved' and 'by the press of the union of Prague.' There is a foreword about the author written by V. Cervinka the translator that is dated June 1914. Whew! I certainly hope that information is correct. So this small volume was self-published by the translator. It measures 5.75" high by 4" wide. The covers are hardbound with a wonderful cloth print of cats in blue medallions on a dark red background. The spine is unmarked, with the title appearing in a bright blue box on the front. The inside front and back covers are a charming folk print, as shown. There are 153 pages, and they are somewhat darkened, as I tried to show in the photos. There is a satin ribbon place marker, as shown. The corners are a bit bumped, but it's really in excellent shape. I had fun researching this, but it's such a rarity - I hope someone will see and appreciate it.
