Notes: Cales was an ancient city of Campania in southern Italy (in today's comune of Calvi Risorta) belonging originally to the Aurunci and Ausoni tribes and located on the Via Latina. The Romans captured it in 335 BC and established a colony with 2,500 citizens. Cales was initially the center of the Roman dominion in Campania. It was also an important base in the war against Hannibal. The fertility of its territory and its manufacture of black glazed pottery, which was even exported to Etruria, made it prosperous. Coinage: In the period after 335 are numerous silver and bronze coins with the inscription CALENO. The early type of the reverses on the AES Grave types was a kantharos or cup (calix) and was probably chosen as an indication of the chief industries of the city, the wine-trade and manufacture of ceramics. It also suggests the resemblance in sound between calix and Cales. Campania was a region of Italy located on the south-western coast of the Italian Peninsula, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. Seashores of the region was colonised by Ancient Greeks between 8th and 7th centuries BC, becoming part of so-called Magna Græcia. The coinage of this district was of Greek Phocaean origin, and consisted of didrachms and of bronze coins of about the same size as the didrachm, which perhaps represent the older litra of silver. The silver money comes to an end in general about B.C. 268, when the Roman denarius was first issued. How long after this date bronze continued to be coined in Campania it is hard to determine but it was certainly very generally issued down to the close of the Hannibalic war and the fall of Capua, B.C. 211, and some towns specially favoured by the Romans may have preserved the right of coining their own bronze money for perhaps a century longer.
