Description: This is a charming, late 19th century, circa 1885, oil on canvas painting, in a somewhat but hardly totally primitive hand, 16 1/2" by 21 1/2" (20" by 24 3/4" framed), unsigned, in a style reminiscent of the Hudson River School, with greens and brown and a bright blue luminous sky. The details are fascinating: a total of three figures, charmingly dressed, including hunter (I think, smoking a long pipe) with his dog. The central feature is a horse hitched to a wood-carrying wagon. The piece shows its great age, with canvas rumpling, varnish yellowing, a 1 1/4" torn disturbed area at upper left in sky, "L" shaped abrasion above the wagon in sky, and very small circular black holes at sky top, which are like old worm holes in the canvas. None of this is unusual for paintings of this age and type. To me the piece seems American in feeling though I suppose it could be of European origin. Frame is later though still very old, perhaps 1920's or 1930's at latest, and has a few losses.
