Description: This is an antique Japanese woodcut block print recently purchased from a local estate sale. It is from the 53 Stations of the Tokaido by Ando Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). The artist created a series of prints in 1832 after he had traveled along the Tokaido for the first time. This is the 46th print in a series of 55. It is entitled 庄野 Shōno's White Rain and depicts travelers surprised by a sudden rainstorm at the 45th station along the road. This is a genuine old block print---there are ink marks outside the border and the ink has bled through on the back of the paper. See photos. There is a publishers Hoyeido seal and the artist's signature is above the seal stamp. There is also a signature in the yellow ribs of the umbrella and a publishers stamp in the margin. The back of the matting has a hand written note that says "gift from Randy Arner Sept 12 1970". It was framed and hanging in a dark corner for the last 54 years so the colors are bright and the paper is strong and undamaged. The block printed area measures 14 7/8" X 9 7/8". The paper measures 15 3/8" X 10 1/8". Condition: Good. It is unframed but is scotched taped in the upper corners to the matte.
