Anchor Hocking Glass ~ 1900's Beehive Pattern ~ Hurricane Oil Lamp ~ 10" Tall

Description: Anchor Hocking first came into existence when Isaac J. Collins and six friends raised $8,000 to buy the Lancaster Carbon Company, Lancaster, Ohio, when it went into receivership in 1905. The company's facility was known as the Black Cat from all the carbon dust. The company originally produced handmade items. By the 1920s, the firm was manufacturing a wide variety of wares including chimneys and lantern globes, tableware, tumblers, and novelties. Hocking introduced its first line of pressed glass dinnerware in 1928. Molded and etched dinnerware followed.Hocking acquired several glass houses in the early 1930s. Hocking began producing new glass containers in 1931. In 1937, Hocking merged with the Anchor Cap and Closure Corporation. The company became Anchor Hocking Glass Company in 1939. The company expanded, building new glass plants in several states. In 1969, its name was changed to Anchor Hocking Corporation, reflecting its diversifying into plastics and other areas. Lamp Base has the Beehive Pattern used by Anchor Hocking Glass Co. since early 1900's and has antique threaded brass ring pressed into glass technique that was replaced around 1920 and then that was superseded by the interior threaded glass. "NOTE: Paraffin in the UK is kerosene. Paraffin Oil in the UNITED STATES is Liquid Candle Wax , and is mis-labeled for use in oil lamps and lanterns, when in fact it is only suited for Candle Oil Lamps that use small diameter (under 1/4”,) round wick. 99% or 100% Paraffin Oil is NOT designed or suitable for use in tubular lanterns or oil lamps that use flat wick, or Kosmos or Matador type oil lamps. Further, it burns only 1/2 as bright of any of the approved fuels listed above. Paraffin oil has a much higher viscosity and a flash point of 200 degrees or higher, as compared to the flash point of 150 degrees for kerosene. These differences inhibit the necessary capillary action of the wick, and will cause Lamps and Lanterns with 7/8" or larger wick to burn improperly and erratic. Once a wick is contaminated with paraffin oil, it must be replaced in order for the lantern to burner properly. If you must use paraffin oil, it may be mixed 1:10 to 2:10 (one to two parts paraffin,) to ten parts standard lamp oil or kerosene so that it will burn satisfactorily. Paraffin Oil is sold in the United States under the following trade names, which should be avoided except for use with lamps or lanterns with 1/4” Round of 1/2" round or smaller wick :Aura Oil, Crown Royal, Firelight Glass, Orvis Lamp Fuel, Northern Lights, Northwest, Pure Lite, Soft Light, Ultra-Pure, Recochem Ultra-Clear Lamp Oil, Tropical Lights, Weems & Plath WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU VERIFY THAT THE FLASH POINT OF ANY KEROSENE THAT YOU PLAN TO USE IN ANY OIL LAMP OR LANTERN OR KEROSENE HEATER IS BETWEEN 124 AND 150 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT." Increasing numbers of new glass kerosene lamps have been coming on the market. This includes everything from small finger-lamps to multicolored banquet lamps. New lamps continue to be made overseas as well as here in America. The new kerosene lamps are generally quite good quality. Like any other mass-produced items, however, pattern detail and overall quality vary from piece to piece. One of the catalogs from a new lamp wholesaler claims its lamps "were made using the original antique lamps as models. The easiest first test to catch new glass lamps is to simply expose them to black light. The vast majority of all new glass lamp fonts and bases are glued together. Vintage glass kerosene lamps were fused together when the glass was hot. All the pressed glass lamps we purchased for this article, which came from several sources, were glued. Even knowing what to look for, it is difficult to detect the glue in ordinary light with the naked eye. But every new joint fluoresces brightly in black light (Fig. 3). Old joints that are fused, not glued, do not fluoresce at the base-font joint. See all of our listings, visit: Ika's Trains and Collectables Note #1: I will combine shipping for multiple items.
