Description: This is a unique 15¼" African Vintage Carved Ebony Male from Tanzania. I bought piece about 10 years ago at a large estate auction. This estate had a huge collection of African art bought in the 1960's. I will estimate this piece to be from the 60's. Ebony is an exceptionally hard and dense black beautiful wood found in East Africa. In Africa it is also known as “Mpingo”. Ebony wood is one of the most intensely black woods known, which combined with its very high density, fine texture, and the ability to polish it very smoothly, has made it very valuable. In fact it is one of the most expensive woods. In Tanzania (East Africa) uses this wood to make their carvings. Their artistic output is both traditional and contemporary. When finished, the carvings are polished and the wood quite literally shines. This ebony male would be wonderful to add to your collection or to give as a gift.Unfortunately, due to overuse, the Mpingo African Blackwood tree is severely threatened in Kenya, as well as in other parts of Africa, and its use is becoming restricted.
