2001 Donruss ANNIVERSARY ORIGINALS BOX TOPPER Tom Glavine Graded Rookie Card

Description: Offered here is a tough-to-find box topper coming out of 2001 Donruss. After a near 3-year absence, the Donruss brand was resurrected by Playoff once they obtained MLB licensing, after purchasing the Donruss/Leaf names in bankruptcy court from the defunct Pinnacle Corp. Once cleared to produce baseball cards, Playoff started working on a grand re-introduction of the ‘Donruss’ brand. Not only did they produce a set for 2001, but they also retroactively released limited sets for the missing years 1999 and 2000, whose cards would be sealed within packs of 2001 product. In addition, to observe the 20th Anniversary of the Donruss brand, Playoff bought-back previously released Donruss Rookie Cards, on the secondary market. These cards were sent to Beckett for grading, and slabbed, and finally packed out as box toppers in the 2001 Donruss Hobby boxes. Unfortunately, whatever points Playoff earned for “creativity”, they lost for “execution” due to poor card quality selection, with most repurchased cards grading out in the 7-8 range. But still, the idea was forward thinking and unique in the Industry. Each Buy-Back can be identified on Beckett’s label for each graded card, designating it as “2001 DONRUSS ANNIV. ORIGINALS.” This is the 1988 Donruss Rookie Card of Hall of Fame hurler, Tom Glavine. As you can see from the photos it graded out as a ‘Near Mint+’ 7.5, with sub-grades on the back.
