You are bidding on about 20 Gyokuryu Japanese Cedar seeds - Cryptomeria japonica 'gyokuryu ' . This is a fast-growing, broadly conical selection of Japanese cedar with exceptionally stiff needles that tend to be a much darker green than most cryptomerias. Holds its color quite well through the winter, but will show some winter bronzing if planted in areas with extremely high winds in winter. Cones - globular shaped cones are visible on most specimens as they mature, and are approx 3/4" - 1" in diameter. Cones start out in late spring as a light solid green color, and ripen as the season progresses into a coppery brown color in mid fall. An annual growth rate of 12 to 15 inches (30 - 38 cm). Mature Height: 15 - 20 feet Mature Width: 5 - 7 feet Hardiness Zones: 6 - 9 (0 to -10 F / -17.8 to -23.3 C) Medicinal use of Japanese Cedar: An oil and/or a resin from the plant is depurative and also used in the treatment of gonorrhea.Other uses of Japanese Cedar: The leaves are very aromatic and are used as incense sticks. A fairly wind-tolerant tree, it can be used in shelter belt plantings. Wood - light, fragrant, fine grained. The wood is strongly rot resistant, easily worked, and is used for buildings, bridges, ships, lamp posts, furniture, utensils, and paper manufacture. The wood can be used as a substitute for Deal. Old wood that has been buried in the soil turns a dark green and is then much esteemed.
