Description: This is a pair of late Edo Era (c. 1850) antique Japanese Samurai warrior dolls done in a soft sculpture with full armor over a firm base. They have wooden heads and gofun (crushed oyster shell) finished face along with carved wooden hands. The one seated represents a Samurai General or Shogun. The slightly smaller one represents the bannerman of the Samurai General.. He would have been holding a banner of the samurai clan he represents or a spear. there is a full set of spears and banners with wooden stand (see pictures) The full set of armor is very realistically detailed. It was purchased at auction in Japan in the original storage box seen in next to the last two pictures.Having been in storage for nearly 200 years, with the exception of minor signs of past use, they remain in very good condition. The smaller has a hole in the back of his armor (see picture 16). The seated shogun measures 16" tall and his kneeling attendant measures 11" (40 x 28 cm).
