Description: ULTRA RARE DRAFT "CONCEPT STUDY" BY NOTED JAPANESE ARCHITECT JUNZO YOSHIMURA, PRODUCED IN 1979 PN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SOUTH GARDEN COMPLEX OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTUTITION IN WASHINGTON DC. Fully titled, The Smithsonian Institution South Garden Development : Concept Study. Authored by Junzo Yoshimura Architect, produced in April 1979. This was purchased from the estate of Warren Robbins. "Warren Murray Robbins (September 4, 1923 – December 4, 2008) was an American art collector, whose collection of African art led to the formation of the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution..." (Wikipedia). The African Museum of Art is within the complex of the "South Garden" of the Smithsonian Institution. Here is an overview of the complex, found online whose design was initially proposed by Junzo Yoshimura. THIS "CONCEPT STUDY" IS THE ITEM BEING OFFERED HERE..: "Ground breaking for the Smithsonian Institution Quadrangle began in 1983, although design and planning for such a unique complex began in 1978. There was a strong desire to place the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery near the Freer Gallery of Art, but space on the mall was limited. The solution, developed by architect Junzo Yoshimura, was to build a discreet, underground complex. Each of the three buildings has an above ground entrance, but the majority (96%) of the National Museum of African Art, Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, and S. Dillon Ripley International center lies underground. The firm of Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson and Abbot, lead by Jean-Paul Carlhian, also contributed to the design and construction." The slim Concept Study is in VERY GOOD CONDITION. The covers are thick paper with a paste-on front cover title, lightly soiled. No interior marks, solidly bound pages. The pages up until 21 are a type of Japanese fold pages - they are uncut at the fore-edge. Each page (if you will) is a single leaf and, as folded from a larger sheet, the next page is behind but an entirely separate leaf. Then, starting on page 21, each page is a single leaf with a blank back. This style continues to page 35. The last 2 leaves are unpaginated and contains four photos. One of the photos in this 4-photo set at the end was also found online in the "archives" of the Smithsonian - that photo is shown as a screenshot of these archives as the last listing photo in this listing. SO THIS IS A SNAPSHOT OF THE HISTORY OF THE SMITHSONIAN GROUNDS, SHOWING THE "CONCEPT" OF THE SOUTH GARDEN COMPLEX FIRST CONCEIVED BY JUNZO YOSHIMURA, NOTED JAPANESE ARCHITECT! On this architect from Wikipedia: "Junzō Yoshimura (吉村 順三, Yoshimura Junzō, September 7, 1908 – April 11, 1997) was a Japanese architect... ... On his return to Tokyo in 1941 he set up his own practice. In 1953, because of his connections with Raymond, Yoshimura secured the project to design a traditional Japanese Tea House in the garden of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This house, named Shofuso, or Pine Breeze Villa, was moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1957, where it remains as a historic site open to the public as Shofuso Japanese House and Garden. In 1955 he collaborated with Kunio Maekawa and Junzo Sakakura to design the International House of Japan in Roppongi, Tokyo. This cultural exchange complex is located within estates owned by samurai lords in the Edo period. It is constructed in-situ thin-set reinforced concrete walls, pre-cast concrete columns and beams and Oya Stone. Yoshimura's later works include the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art (1959) in Haifa, Tokyo Imperial Palace (1968), Japan House (with George G. Shimamoto of Kelly & Gruzen, 1969–71) in New York City, the East and West Wings of the Nara National Museum (1972) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy (1977) in Tokyo. With his colleagues, he won the Prize of the Architectural Institute of Japan for Specific Contribution for the International House of Japan." BB4
