Hammered DulcimerThis, my second album, is a result of the fine acceptance of my first;“Allegheny Trails.”Appearing at scores of arts and crafts festivals, and before clubs, schoolgroups and others has been a great adventure for me. The unique andbeautiful voices of the hammered and the plucked dulcimer and themusical saw are appreciated by people of all ages and from every walk oflife. The hammered dulcimer and the plucked dulcimer are instruments ofantiquity, whose voices are being heard across our land in a growingrevival of heritage music. Many fine craftsmen are now producing theseinstruments.Brought into these mountains by early settlers, the dulcimers providedgreat pleasure to these people at a time when pleasures were few andhardships were a-plenty.My 70-string hammered dulcimer was built by Asel Gardner, ofKingwood, W. Va. The 5-string plucked dulcimer is a birthday present, made and given me by my friend and master craftsman, Bill Davis, ofGatlinburg, Tenn. The musical saw, properly played, is truly not a “novelty instrument.”The voice of the saw is a haunting and amazingly pure one. This“instrument” became popular around 1920. It is now beginning to makeits “return debut.”Two men deserve special recognition in preserving our mountain musicand culture; Russell Fluharty, of Mannington, W. Va. and Dr. PatrickGainer, of Tanner, W. Va., Professor Emeritus of West VirginiaUniversity: “Russ,” for his 50 years of entertaining thousands across theland, and Dr. Gainer for his lifetime of recording, lecturing andpublications in the field of Mountain music and the culture of ourmountain people.Rainbow’s End is dedicated to the revival of our mountain musicalculture, and in particular to son Roger, daughter Barbara and to my mostloyal fan, wife Juanita. To the listener: may the Lord richly bless you with good health, happiness and many wonderful adventures!Photographed at Arden Falls, Tygart River, W.
