Description: Ships via FedEx 2-Day Air – International Shipping Available 1941 Pennsylvania Dealer License Plate – Exp. March 31, 1942 This is an original 1941 Pennsylvania dealer license plate with expiration March 31, 1942. This is a smaller-than-standard license plate more common on early dealer tags used for temporary registration or vehicle test drives during that period. ConditionThis plate is in good shape for its age but is by no means new. The back side is well worn and has some paint missing at the top, there's no obvious rust, but it has pits, scratches, marks, and generally looks like an ol' plate, but it's respectable and looks like it should. I think it's probably been re-cleared at some point but certainly not recently, like probalby when it was still on a vehicle. Side note: it's quite difficult to photograph dark blue/bright orange with an iphone because they're on opposite colors of the wheel and let's just say it's not an android camera, so sorry about the photos but I did my best. Historical Snippets License plates in the United States have evolved considerably since their introduction in the early 1900s. Initially, there was no universal standard for plate size, material, or design. Some of the first plates were crafted from leather, wood, or porcelain. Massachusetts issued the first state-regulated plate in 1903, but other states required drivers to create their own until formal regulations were established. By the 1920s, the push for uniformity grew stronger, driven by the Automobile Manufacturers Association (AMA) and the need for plates that could consistently fit on vehicle mounting brackets. However, it wasn’t until 1956 that a national agreement standardized plate dimensions to 6 inches by 12 inches—the size we recognize today. Pre-1956 plates, especially for dealer, motorcycle, and commercial vehicles, often varied in size. Smaller plates like this one (around 5 x 8 inches) were issued for temporary use and typically mounted on the rear of vehicles, allowing dealers to transfer plates between cars for test drives or deliveries.
