Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE VOYAGE OF THE CHELYUSKIN by Members of the Expedition, translated by Alec Brown. First edition published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1935. There are 32 b/w plates and 8 maps, one of which is fold-out.SS Chelyuskin was a Soviet steamship, reinforced to navigate through polar ice, that became ice-bound in Arctic waters during navigation along the Northern Maritime Route from Murmansk to Vladivostok, and sank. 111 people were on board the Chelyuskin, and all but one were rescued by air. The expedition's task was to determine the possibility to travel by non-icebreaker through the Northern Maritime Route in a single navigation season. This book details the whole expedition from the point of view of the crew but also accounts by the airmen who rescued them.Turquoise cloth hardboards with a white image of a boat stuck in ice to the front board. Dark green lettering to the spine. Spine is faded and the front board has some wrinkling. Bookplate to front endpaper. Foxing just to first couple of pages. Some wrinkling to last few pages.
