Herbert Ottley's time in India, 1897-1908. Original vintage photograph, covering the period from 1897 to 1908. Contains a total of 182 photographs related to India (including some of a ship voyage out via Port Said), of which approx. 19 are of a small size, 124 of a medium size and 39 of a larger size. Together with other ephemera, inc. 6 postcards, a small painting and a hand-drawn postcard, plus a further 30 photographs of family life in England at the rear of the album, and a handful of loose images. Size: 4to. Album - 29cm x 22cm / photographs - various sizes, from quite small to quite approx. 19.5cm x 14.5cm.Very Good condition. A couple of leaves detached but present. A couple of apertures are empty, with the photos seemingly haven fallen out, although there are a number of photos laid loosely inside. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.This photograph album provides an excellent insight into the life of an English clergyman and his family in British India over an 11-year period, from 1897 to 1908.The first section of this highly interesting original photograph album covers Rev. Ottley's life in Shillong, northeast India, and includes a few of images of the aftermath of the 1897 Assam earthquake, as well as scenes and people in and around Darjeeling (as well as a visit from the Bishop of Calcutta). Some photographs follow of a prolonged tour made by Ottley, his wife and daughters around Punjab province, taking in Shadipur, Gunderbal and Islamabad and numerous other places, and includes a photo of their church tent. Other photos show scenes in Kashmir, Jhelum, Srinagar, Baramulla, to name just a few. Many show Ottley and his family at home in their bungalow or with their ponies. key words:
