Thereare words and not music staffs because so many of the worshipping places had nomusical instruments. The hymns are uniquely noted with themeter number. This indication reminded people that many of ourgreatly loved hymns can be sung to other familiar tunes.For example "O For AThousand Tongues" isa Common Meter song. But it can alsobe sung to the tune of "Amazing Grace" and visaversa. Seethe pictures of some of these hymns.
