Description: 1549 New Testament Second Edition of the “Thomas Matthew” Bible When does one get a chance to own a pre-1550 Bible that is essentially William Tyndale’s edition? Printed just 13 years after the translator’s death, this is the second edition “Matthew” Bible – but only the New Testament portion, beautifully rebound. It is 11.5 by 7.5 by 1 inches, a black letter small folio. It contains the complete New Testament, including a table at the end, title page restored. NOTE: as this Bible is nearly 500 years old, there are some chips, tears, wormholes, light soiling, and repairs throughout, as expected. Take a close look at the photos for examples. That said, the Bible is still readable and overall nicely preserved. For all intents and purposes, this is a Tyndale New Testament from the same century in which he actually lived. It contains Tyndale’s notes and introductions, revised and edited by Edmund Berke. The first edition of Matthew’s Bible was edited and publication overseen by Tyndale’s friend, John Rogers. Tyndale was martyred in Belgium in 1536 during the reign of King Henry VIII, and Rogers was martyred in 1555 under Queen Mary (“Bloody Mary”). The second edition of the Matthew Bible is the first to contain the name of William Tyndale, since this edition was printed during the reign of Edward VI. (The first printing of any scripture to act on this new freedom is Petyt’s 1548 Tyndale New Testament). This edition contains the well-known “wife-beater” note in 1 Peter 3. On the words, to “dwel with a wife according to knowledge,” in which occurs the sentence, “And yf she be not obedient and healpfull unto hym endevoureth to beat the feare of God into her heade, that thereby she maye be compelled to learne her duitie and do it.” This New Testament is extremely rare as are all Bibles printed in English prior to Queen Mary’s reign (1553 to 1558). The “Matthew’s Bible” of William Tyndale as seen through the press of John Rogers is “generally considered to be the real primary version of our English Bible” (A.S. Herbert). I purchased this Bible a little over five years ago from Greatsite, the “world’s largest dealer of rare and antique Bibles.” Their appraisal value of this volume at the time was $35,000.
